Home in the Other: Photozine Workshop with Adriana Monsalve

Home in the Other: Photozine Workshop with Adriana Monsalve In-Person

Your personal narrative is a powerful tool. We can dismantle the ‘other’ when we trust ourselves with our own stories and are willing to take them into vulnerable spaces.

Home in the Other is a collaborative zine-making project using the mediums of photography and writing. Students are asked to participate by engaging with their individual experience and paralleling these with others’ encounters. Working with a partner -- a friend, acquaintance, or stranger --  each participant will work to develop an image + text in response to the idea of finding “home in the other.” Through this intimate and investigative process, we delve into kinship and community. Together, we can further understand our current condition through this intersectional workshop.

Registration is free but required due to space. Sign up using the button below!

Workshop outcomes:

  • Participants will work with a partner to create an image + text in response to the idea of "finding home in the other." The final pages will later be collected into a photozine. All participants who contribute work will receive a copy of the final printed zine (2-3 weeks after the workshop).

About the Artist & Faciliator:

Adriana Monsalve is an artist and collaborative publisher working in the photobook medium. Together with Caterina Ragg, they run Homie House Press from Beltsville, MD and Lambrate, Milano, Italy. HHP is a radical cooperative platform where they challenge the ever-changing forms of storytelling with image + text.

Monsalve earned a Masters in Photojournalism from the University of Westminster, London in 2013. In 2018, she was awarded the Lucie Independent Photo Book Prize for her collaborative photo book, Femme Frontera, a project which was funded by the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures and was part of the Master Artist Grant for 2017.

The works of Homie House Press have been collected in the Library of Congress, the Thomas J. Watson Library at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, among other private collections. At Mason, you can find Monsalve’s photobooks and HHP publications in the Mason Libraries Artists’ Book Collection, housed in the Special Collections Research Center.
